The Beginning of My Semester at Sea Adventure

This research blog will (hopefully) become a travel blog while I'm away, although Internet access has already become somewhat of a challenge.

I'm currently working as a Teaching Assistant for the Fall 2014 voyage of Semester at Sea. This is an academic program run by the Institute of Shipboard Education, which is currently partnered with the University of Virginia.

The main idea is to build up an academic community of around 600 students and around 40 or so faculty members, which sails the world teaching a wide range of disciplines that engage with the places on our itinerary. The learning experience, for both students and faculty, is therefore one orientated towards becoming world citizens.

The itinerary is below:

  • Embark: Southampton (London), England
  • Saint Petersburg, Russia
  • Gdansk, Poland
  • Rostock, Germany
  • Kiel Canal Transit, Germany
  • Antwerp, Belgium
  • Le Havre, France
  • Dublin, Ireland
  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Cadiz, Spain
  • Casablanca, Morocco
  • Dakar, Senegal
  • Takoradi, Ghana
  • Tema (Accra), Ghana
  • Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Salvador, Brazil
  • Bridgetown, Barbados
  • Havana, Cuba
  • Debark: Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States

This research blog will become, for the next four months, a research blog of another kind. I will try to post as much as I can, in the hope that anyone who wishes may join us on this journey.
